Unaunahi

Throughout the year this maori motif was used to mark the majority of my carvings. The unaunahi is one of the most used within the Tai Tokerau region. Usually in groups of 3 or 4 it does indeed look awesome when used in multiplies with haehae parallel lines.

Work experience

Over the past four months, my work experience involved carving with a local carver, Shane Whatarau. He has been able to bring me back up to speed again creating many different carved forms such as the tuere, mokomoko and other types of manaia. Within the realm of whakairo it is vital to keep in touch with other carvers to enhance your knowledge as well as your skills. Below are a few things created in that time.

This is a Ngapuhi mania called the Tuuere.
The Tuuere is a two headed mania that connects to each other by the mouth.

Mania

The single mania can be joined together at the lip to make a complete face.

Mokomoko

The mokomoko is regarded as a spiritual vessel and also a sign of abundance.

Networking

One important part of Whakairo (Maaori carving) is networking with other carvers especially within the Tai Tokerau region. The reason for this is that the Tai Tokerau is without any carving schools. This is Shane Whatarau who has carved on many marae and has just finished the gateway/waharoa and the front entrance of his marae at Akerama. Shane shares alot of knowledge and skills with others and i am very grateful to have the opportunity to be invited to help carve a pouwhenua for Ngati Hau. Opportunities always come with networking.

Kotahitanga

To gain true Independence we must realize that we are all dependant on each other.

Government policies try to make us all individuals so we are always reliant on them. They segregate us and try to put us in rectangle boxes. When you are inside the box, they know that they have better control of you. However there are many throughout the land that get out of the box. They are the ones that find unity with others. Who express themselves for what they believe in. They are leaders, they are Maaori and Pakeha of New Zealand with a understanding of unity. These people are what government calls terrorists.

These contemporary poupou represent the unity of Maaori and Paakeha. Maaori are represented in the whakarei (design) patterns and the materials used (mdf and brass links) represent the modern world of the Paakeha. Standing together there is an aesthetic wow. The government are represented with the rectangular box shapes.

Personal Career Plan

Unlike other types of professions whakairo is a specialist profession. Its not like you can look up your local carver in the ph book. a carver needs to be carving for at least 10yrs to gain the experience and knowledge to not only know the diffrent cuts and designs that go into each peice but also the whakapapa and many karakia that goes with it. Another significate aspect is the spiritual language. This language comes from Io to our tupuna/ansestors and from our tupuna to the living vessels that are our living carvers of today.

Korowai

Exegesis (space and materials)
In our brief we were given a task to respond to a selected piece of text. From the piece of text we were to form multiple 3D images out of paper. These images were to construct a picture giving life to the selected text and was only allowed to be placed on the wall.
The text I had chosen was "stand out in the crowd"
To do this I made one piece of paper unique in a cluster of pieces. As an emerging artist we also have to stand out in the crowd if we are to make a living from our art. To show that our art is unique. To capture the onlookers and to shift their perception of your art into an aesthetic wow. This is a awesome attribute to have when creating art for an exhibition. One comment that was interesting was, that it looked like feathers on a korowai draped on the wall.
At a personal level when i reflect back on our efforts as a class when we install these. I couldn't help feeling that, in this exercise everybody in our class was revealing something about themselves and how they go about creating art. Maybe all of this is done on a subconscious level.
